Frédéric Chopin/Frederic Meinders - Étude in C sharp minor op25 no7
Thomas Ang, piano
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The C sharp minor étude from opus 25, also known as the "Cello" étude, was the only one never transcribed by Leopold Godowsky in his monumental set of Studies. While space was planned (it was assigned op37), the manuscript - if it existed - was never found, along with several others including a triple étude that would have been a contrapuntal combination of all three A minor études.
Meinders, on the other hand, is a well-known Dutch pianist still alive today. A prolific composer and transcriber, both for left-hand solo and both hands, his work is not yet as well-known as Hamelin's. In a series entitled "Hommage à Leopold Godowsky" he made transcriptions of several Chopin works, including waltzes, and even a combination of a Chopin étude with the Schubert E flat major impromptu (op90 no2).
This work, Meinders' interpretation of the missing no37, is informed by Godowsky's style and yet reworks the material of the original into a very compelling elegy. Interesting points are the inversion of the introduction, and the transposition of parts of the original melodies to allow conflation into one long line.
The recording made here today was made from a realisation off his Schumann & Chopin CD, because I couldn't afford to buy the sheet music; it was also good aural training for me.
