In the years 2004-2009, after surviving cancer, Ferd Lauffer completed his Silver and five Gold Coureur des Bois designations in the Canadian Ski Marathon, which requires two days of 50 miles each, carrying a backpack and camping out on the night in between. Completing this arduous task, he earned Permanent Bib No. 242 (the total number of people who had done this in 43 years through 2009 was 248).
In his younger days he summited several Alpine peaks, and over the same years as the CSM, Ferd has completed the Appalachian Trail, crossed the US on his bicycle (3777 miles in 29 days), completed the 300 mile Catamount Trail on skis, completed the Paris-Brest-Paris bicycle race (750 miles in 90 hours), and last summer, completed the London-Edinburgh-London race (875 miles in less than 110 hours). He was a full-time high school math teacher during those years. Did I mention he is also an accomplished organist and sings in the Vermont Symphony Chorus?
