Over the next few minutes you will see the production of one of New Zealands first pits of Alkalage made at Stradbrook Robotic Dairy Farm in early February 2009.

Alkalage is the name given to forages made from a mature cereal crop which can be wheat, barley, triticale, oats or maize that have been processed through a forage harvester fitted with a small grain processing mill and preserved using Home n Dry Pellets. Alkalage is a high dry matter forage which combines the performance enhancing effects of starch from grain with the health benefits of nutritionally improved, effective fibre capable of supporting rumination. It has a high pH typically 8 or above and is always associated with increased dry matter intake compared to acidic fermented wholecrop and grass silage.

  • what are the crude protein levels of the alkalage, and how does that compare to a forage cereal crop that is cut early for silage?
