(Key West) -- The verdict is in. Monique Acevedo has pleaded guilty and has received a sentence of 8 years in prison and 22 years of probation in her role in scheming and defrauding Monroe County Schools. She received concurrent five year sentences for other charges.
Her defense is that the crimes were caused by a combination of prescription drug abuse and a debilitating bi-polar disorder intensified by the drug use. Acevedo faced six charges in three cases as she entered the courtroom this morning. Judge Jones took into consideration a "Downward Departure" argument presented by her attorney.
