lol im 11 and im getting dentures

@112233mode In short it's to allow space for the secondary impression material (Zinc Oxide Eugenol). If there wasn't a spacer the material would just squeeze/flow straight out of the special tray when put in the patients mouth and you wouldn't get an accurate secondary impression.

@112233mode Anyway after the secondary impressions, the major cast/model is made and this is the cast that is used for the rest of the process to hopefully give the dentures a good fit.

@112233mode Then you make your primary model (the one at 0:20) and put spacer in and fit your special tray over it. The spacer is there so you can when it comes to taking the secondary impression there is room to fit the next material you're going to use (usually a thin wash (0.6mm) of Zinc Oxide Eugenol). The secondary impression is more accurate, I think because it takes into account the soft tissues, like muscle attacments and similar things. I think the secondary impression is mucostatic.

@112233mode Basically there's 2 steps in taking impressions for making patients.

Firstly you take a rough primary impression with a mucocompressive material (Normally something called compound). It's called mucocompressive because, in a way, it displaces the soft tissues so you can get a good impression of the alveolar ridge. (this is before the spacer).
