This video features the LORAM rail grinder over the course of 15 miles on the NS Harrisburg Line, HP 76.7 to HP 61. Notice how it sets off the Dragging Equipment Detector at Milepost 64.6 (this detector no longer exists, it was moved to 63.5).

Follow LORAM RG 306 as it grinds at over 9 locations. I fit what I could in 10 minutes.

FAQ regarding the first few scenes:
"Why are they grinding forward and backward?"

Answer:
The grinding equipment must pass over banked radii THREE times.

  • Even though the detector goes off, the dispatcher or whoever must know that its just the grinding being done and not an actual problem correct?

  • Yes, LORAM can keep going. Typically something sets it off.

  • Great video, just a side note, but Loram lost CSX to Harsco.

  • I heard Harsco is known for burning down towns! ;-)

  • what really or are you just kidding aha?? awesome vid as usual man!

  • I'm joking. Although they have had several derailments, one of which killed two employees. One time while grinding on UP they started a fire which caused $3 million in damages. I know of at least on derailment with LORAM on a non-grinding move, but I was never informed of any other incidents with Loram. Harsco has a more elaborate record.

  • Great filming, great quality and very interesting! More like this please!.......And thanks for uploading this

  • Why do they spray water at RR crossings? Is it to cool off the rails, wash away some of the residue, or both?

  • GREAT video.

I wanna be the guy at the end of the train.

"What do you do for a living?"

"I get to play around with a water cannon and get PAID for it!" :)

  • Excellent video*****. Awesome catch. To see it in action explains a few things I wondered about. Some of your finest work.
