My version of what the Orange Tiny Terror could have been (If they designed it in the 60's or 70's) 5U4GB rectified, 2 x 12AX7 + 2 x EL84 tube amp built into a vintage bookshelf speaker cabinet I picked up at a estate sale. I used an old Fender Special Design speaker. Gain, Bass, Treble, and Master Volume are the only controls. Based off the early Orange/Matamp preamp section mated to a cathode bias 2xEL84 power section. James tonestack, dc coupled cathodyne PI, PPIMV master volume, cathode bias, a little bit of NFB. Hard wired point to point with carbon comp resistors. Goes from a gritty clean to thick overdrive to wild squishy fuzz with the gain and bass maxed. This sucker gets LOUD! Lots of harmonic overtones happening.

Plugged in a with a stock Italia Maranello Speedster on the bridge humbucker.

Gain at about 75%
Treble at 80%
Bass at 20%
Master at 25%

At 0:37 The volume on the guitar is rolled back to clean it up a bit.

  • Strange indeed - and eerily beautiful like your others. You are doing something very right. I wish I had the $ to spring for this right now!

  • @DrOnymous Thanks! I enjoy doing these handcrafted folk-art/re-purposed style stuff as a contrast to my tidy-er "clone" and "production" amps.

  • Wow, sounds badass! Like it better than my tiny terror. Would totally snatch it up if I wasn't out of the job :(

  • @Ombrenuit thanks, I dig this thing. I just did a rebuild on an old no-name amp from the 60's, retrofitting the actual tiny terror circuit, but with 7868 novar output tubes. Interesting sound without the EL84 breakup and chime, more like early tweed Fender style breakup. Will post vid of that one next.

  • @Ombrenuit I rebuilt/re-arranged the components on the entire board, and used the existing tube complement in the amp. I had an extra 12AX7 left over, so I decided on a second channel with a different voicing.

  • @lennythefence sweet! by retrofit do you mean you just replaced the tubes or changed the circuit to accommodate them?
