HOLLIDAYRAIN (Interview)
Why this name?
The original inspiration for the name came in 06 when I was a sophomore in high school. I'm an enormous Colorado Rockies fan and at the time, Matt Holliday was the biggest rising star on the team (though the team itself was in a terrible stretch). So, my name originated from "Matt Holliday's Reign (over the National League)." That phrase eventually shortened to Holliday's Reign, then Hollidayrain. One year later, Matt finished 2nd in the MVP voting and led the Rox to the World Series....NOT A COINCIDENCE! However, the name has much more significance than that (which is why I use it even though he was traded away in Fall 2008). My first ever composition when I was 10 years old used a general midi synth called 'rain' as its lead instrument, and years later, I made a song that I considered to be my signature song at the time called 'Raintrance.' Additionally, the first line of Holiday by Green Day, which was my favorite song as a sophomore in high school, just so happens to be: "Hear the sound of the falling rain!" Furthermore, it occurred to me that snow is 'holiday rain' in Colorado.
So basically, it was a match made in heaven.
Do you play live?
I've started to DJ recently, but I'm still developing my live set to include my EWI midi-controller, which will be awesome! People still look at me like I'm insane when I whip that thing out....(that's what she said).
Band History:
I've been around music my entire life; I grew up listening to Indian Classical Music daily while my mom drove me to pre-school when I lived in Highlands Ranch, CO. Even at that point, my parents knew something weird was going on in my head because I would focus so intently on the music and visualize it so vividly. Then, I started composing using MidiSoft when I was about 10; not long after I picked up the clarinet. I was pretty awful then, but I became passionately interested. After making a few video game covers on midi and writing a couple simple songs, I downloaded the FL Studio demo when I was 14 after a friend recommended it to me. I learned how to use it by ripping my old midis and refurbishing them, and kept going from there. Eventually, I taught myself basics in EQ, sound effects, synthesis, and rudimentary mastering.
While my ability as a producer was a definite work in progress for years, my arrangement skills have always been a strength. This was undoubtedly due to the broad spectrum and massive musical workload I undertook during middle school and high school. 6 years of clarinet lessons, a personal lesson from Kadri Gopalnath (a famous Indian saxophonist), 2 years in a college community band as a middle schooler, a year in jazz band playing alto sax, 2 years of latin percussion, a year of tabla, regional honor bands, helping write and produce an acoustic guitar song, pit orchestra for a play (playing both the clarinet as well as the bass clarinet), and small ensembles have all contributed to my intensely diverse musical style.
