So we are stuck battling with which is best because both have failed in different and similar ways.

Communism is not socialism and vice versa. Many, many democratic countries have socialist policies like universal healthcare and the like. The 1% - 99% divide that exists in the US should not be. We toil in the fields while 1% of the population reaped the benefits of the seeds we sow. Do not believe the propaganda of the right. They use buzzwords like communism and socialism to invoke fears left over from the cold war to control you.
