James Bland, who was one of the better known black American composers of the 1800's, wrote this song in an attempt to tell of the plight of many older slaves after they were freed. Some of the more fortunate were taken care of by their family that left for the North or found work elsewhere. Many had been slaves for all of their lives and found freedom a difficult transition. They no longer wanted to be slaves but yearned for the security of that they had known earlier in life. For many, their old 'masters' were the only family that they ever knew. A modified version of "CARRY ME BACK TO OLD VIRGINNY" was actually the Virginia State song until 1997. The 'powers that be' in Virginia decided that it was to racially offensive to be used as a state song. Here is an interesting description of the song from WIKIPEDIA: "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" is a song which was written by James A. Bland (1854--1911), an African American minstrel who wrote over 700 folk songs. It is was an adaption by Bland of the traditional "Carry Me Back to Ole Virginny" popular since the 1840s and frequently sung by Confederate soldiers during the American Civil War. Bland's version, the best known, was adapted in 1878 when many of the newly freed slaves were struggling to find work. The song has become controversial in modern times. This and other songs of 19th century America are available on my new CD - 'SILVER THREADS AMONG THE GOLD' available at: http://musicoftomroush.com and iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/sil...
