PLEASE READ: I do not think I am a martial artist. NOTHING you see here has anything to do with knife fighting or any kind of fighting. If anything, this is an instructional film on how to do POORLY in a knife fight. Which I do not recommend.
This isn't meant to be used as an instructional video really... I just wanted to introduce people to addicting world of balisong manipulation. :) But apparently I DID want to look as much like the Star Wars Kid as possible. Mission accomplished.
Most commonly asked questions
Q: Where can I learn to do this?
A: These days, your best bet is to learn right off of YouTube. Click here for a good list of beginner techniques: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=balisong+tutoria...
Q: How long have you been doing this?
A: I can never remember for sure, but I think I started sometime in '97/'98.
Q: How many times have you cut yourself?
A: This is hard to say. If you count every time I drew blood from a cut, maybe 1,000 times or more.
Q: Have you ever been seriously injured?
A: I have a few scars on the top of my feet, and 14 stitches running across two of my fingers. That accident happened when I was doing the most basic opening, but with a sticky knife.
Q: Where did you get those sheaths?
A: They are custom made by Gary Graley. His website is: http://www.geocities.com/chiseledge/blades.html I have no doubt they'll last me the rest of my life. I'll add too, that I do not wear them to be cool or to look like a cowboy. It's simply the most practical place to wear them. Normally, my shirt hangs out over them, and they can't be seen.
Q: Where can I find a balisong?
A: For most people, the internet is the best place to find them. Here's a google shopping search: http://www.google.com/products?q=balisong&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1...
Q: Are they legal in [insert state]
A: The laws vary from state to state and from town to town. And even then, the wording can be fuzzy. A list of each U.S. state's knife laws can be found here: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/sta-law.htm
Q: What brand should I buy?
A: My personal preference is the Benchmade 42. Made from Titanium and good steel, they have incredible balance and a lifetime warranty. But they're in the $200 price range (about). Cheap balisongs will break. You're going to open and close your balisong thousands of times more than any other kind of knife. 1 good knife will last longer than 20 cheap knives, and will therefore be cheaper. But generally, stick to something that comes with a brand name. Not a nameless, $10 balisong. In the last 10 years or so, the number of makers has sky-rocketed, so your options are many.
