Robert Schumann
Vladimir Horowitz

"Kinderszenen" is German for "Scenes From Childhood." This is a 1962 studio recording from New York City, and it's the bonus track from the album Horowitz Live and Unedited.

Schumann's music is often imaginative and autobiographical, and this piano cycle is no exception. I encourage listeners to follow the music (movements are listed below) while retrospecting about being a child—like Schumann did when he wrote Kinderszenen in 1838 :)

Movement 1: Von Fremden Ländern Und Menschen (Of Foreign Lands and Peoples)

Movement 2: Kuriose Geschichte (A Curious Story); starts at 1:33

Movement 3: Hasche, Mann (Blind Man's Bluff); starts at 2:42

Movement 4: Bittendes Kind (Pleading Child); starts at 3:18

Movement 5: Glückes Genug (Happiness); starts at 4:13

Movement 6: Wichtige Begebenheit (An Important Event); starts at 5:02

Movement 7: Träumerei (Reverie); starts at 5:49

  • The best version of these songs on YouTube. I keep replaying them again and again.

    Beautiful.

The high quality audio info in the video is helpful.

Thank you for this great music.

  • you're welcome, my friend. listening to these movements is a nostalgic mental journey for me.

  • Y'know, Horowitz's Kinderszenen (especially the extremely popular Traumerei) seems to be his signature piece. (With his Rachmaninoff 3, of course!)

  • his rendition of Traumerei is so lyrical, soothing, and sensitive, and his tempo flows perfectly. after Schumann himself, it definitely sounds like one of Horowitz's babies.

  • Each movement of Kinderszenen sublimely beautiful and boundless.

    "Träumerei"....too deep for words.
