@jonesy97 Feltwell is still a nice quiet little place but I can't say I'd fancy living in Mildenhall. (I'm just outside Thetford myself...Thomas Paine and all that). They have just finished putting a new entrance onto Mildenhall along the Brandon Road, and the road that passed Lakenheath gate 2 is now blocked off from the Brandon road end. Other than that it's still the same.
Anyway, chat again sometime.

@SuperAncientmariner Oh yes. We were proud of that clever little acronym! In honesty, I didn't join up until March of 1987, but ironically, would end up serving at the Heath on the same jets that flew that mission. I did, later, take them to Taif, Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. I was a weapons systems specialist. (Fancy title for bomb loader!) Even though it was war, it was quite an experience. Regards. Sure do miss it there. Lived in Feltwell and Mildenhall.

@jonesy97 Do you remember the saying that will always apply to the 111s. LIBYA....Lakenheath is bombing Your Ass..
Many hours spent in the goofing area that this was filmed from

@SuperAncientmariner Uglier? That breaks my heart, lol! Yeah, I guess they're not the most asthetic of aircraft, but they are beautiful to those that toiled on her. A face only a mother could love, kind of attachment, I guess. Sure miss it, though. Miss England much, much more.

Everyone in the Thetford, & Brandon area knows that they take off (and fly) on afterburners for the sole purpose of keeping us awake & rattling our windows.The Aardvarks were just as bad (and uglier) and the Phantoms before that were worse,...smokier and you could smell them. Noisy buggers. :o)

@noordwinter It was better when the F-111's were there. So loud. So much power. I loved it!
Why are they using afterburner?
cjellis3 1 year ago
@cjellis3 Afterburner is used to apply maximum thrust available to reach the required speed for takeoff in the shortest possible distance which is also influenced by aircraft weight, air density, wind speed and direction.

@RoryTrackrod does the USAF send their own ground personal (Marshall, engineers,mechanics) to their foreign air bases.

@gladifly
The USAFE, 48th FW, has mainly US.service personnel (over 5000) supported by British and US civilians.
