Who are you living for?

From childhood, you and I started thinking about our own interests, but, as we grow in maturity, if we are to live Christ-like lives, the focus should shift from ourselves to others. The Bible teaches we are to live for Jesus through putting others above ourselves. Romans 15 tells us we are not to live pleasing ourselves, for this is a sure way to be miserable. The more introspective we become, the more we are not satisfied with what we have, who we are or our lifestyle. It is a vicious cycle: we seek our own ends, pleasures and interests only to find ourselves empty, unfulfilled and depressed. Then, we seek to fill our lives with what is missing only to become more introspective and unfulfilled. Ironically, the more we put our desires and needs aside to live for others, the more we are fulfilled and the more satisfied we become. This is because the focus moves from ourselves to others. And this is the way God has made us to live.

Sometimes, it is easier for us to model someone who is doing right rather than try to follow direct instructions. The Bible gives us both, it instructs us on how to live for other people and it also gives us examples. The best example of this is, of course, Jesus. He did not come to live his own life, but to give his life for. He is our ultimate example.

May God give us many opportunities to express our love for Him this week by living for others. Lets make the adjustments we need to make. If we have been living to please ourselves, lets make a change to live our lives pleasing the Lord through reaching out to bless those around us, and when you answer the question, who are you living for? may you answer, for Jesus!
