An angry hornet's nest of about 200 Dekalb County teachers and other school employees descended on their school board meeting two weeks ago.
They're angry because the Board of Education voted a $15,000 raise for Superintendent Crawford Lewis while ordering another furlough day for them and cuts in their annuity plans.
With school employees all across Georgia facing more furlough days this year, a bill has been introduced in the Georgia legislature to prevent such disparities.
"We support the people in the trenches," State Rep. Ed Rynders told 11Alive News on Wednesday.
The Albany Republican had just introduced H.B. 977, which would ban such raises for superintendents and other administrators by school systems that have ordered furloughs for other workers.
"If they've got to feel the pain that most Georgians are feeling," Rep. Rynders said. "Then I think it's right that the administration doesn't receive pay raises at the expense of teachers, cafeteria workers and bus drivers."
