One of the finest interiors of any synagogue in Europe. Come along and discover a small part of Brighton's history you may have never known about. Brighton's Jewish community steatches back to the late 18th century and its first synagogue pre-dates the first Catholic or Methodist places of worship in the city even! Famous people connected with the place include lords and ladies, politicians, leaders of industry, authors, composers, architects and even the guy that founded Ben Sherman!
To conserve it for the enjoyment of future generations of people from all communities and backgrounds Middle Street Synagogue is in urgent need of funds. Please get in touch if you would like to help out in any way.
The building was constructed in 1874-5 and was benefacted to by many famous 19th century names which ultimately led to the creation of the unique artistic scheme inside. It is a Grade II* listed building being an extremely sumptuous example of high Victorian design and is almost certainly the most ornate building in Brighton outside the Royal Pavilion.
Middle Street is next open on the first Sunday in July 2-5pm then every first Sunday of each month through to October.
We are happy to organize private group tours by arrangement for schools, historical societies, religious groups, art and photographic societies, architecture students, etc.
Thank you for posting this video. Beautiful music and a beautiful place.
