Would the US expend that much energy to scuttle the deal if Iran were trying to procure WW2 era rifles? No. I don't think so. So, they can say all they want about whether or not the weapons are current, but, the fact remains that they were concerned enough about them as to fight hard to prevent Iran from acquiring them.

Anyhow, what the West, and America in particular, fears the most is the prospect of losing its technological edge over the world because, technological superiority is the ONLY thing that remains in their arsenal now. And Iran has demonstrated its ability to reverse engineer things. Moreover, if they S-300 is in face obsolete, why then did the US go to superlative lengths to ensure that Iran never got it?

Latest S-300 variants are top notch compared to all other SAM systems except S-400. They aren't obsolete in several decades. If a country purchased the S-300PMU1/2 or Antey 2500 it's safe simple as that.
