This piece written in 2008 by Elaine Fine for string quintet (2 violins, viola, cello, and bass) or string orchestra, is based on "The Harlot's House," a poem by Oscar Wilde that was published in April of 1885 in "The Dramatic Review." The music serves as an illustration for the text, which is shown here stanza by stanza.

  • What program did you use? I can tell it is not actual string instrumentation, but I liked it just the same. Might you be willing to send some sheet music over for me, an ambitious violist? I thoroughly appreciate this upload.

  • @PricelessMrPrice27 I notated this using Finale, so the instruments are indeed computer generated. The music (score and parts) is available for free at the Petrucci Library. YouTube will not let me post the link in this comment, but if you go to the IMSLP Petrucci Library and search for my name under composers you will find the music there (Dances from the Harlot's House) for you to download.

  • This is beautiful -- wondrous! Thank you so much. It is a perfect musical interpretation of my favourite poem by Wilde. I love that you've included the lines of poetry. Thank you for this rare gift.
