Iron and Aluminum shavings from a bandsaw mixed with KNO3. Cheap and easy. It produced a lot more smoke than is shown at the end of the video too.

  • this is nothing like thermite

    fake stuff

  • Actually it is somewhat similar.

  • nope this is just burning aluminium,

thermite gets hot cause the oxigen from the ironoxide transfers to the aluminium.

since you are using plain iron this ,so called redox reaction does not occur. this doesnt get even near as hot as the real stuff.

  • You're probably correct, but it is still similar. The point of this was just to make something cheap and simple that was similar to thermite. Of course, it does not have all of the qualities of thermite. Agreed?

  • nice little fire thingee you got there .

IF you want to make rust easeliy you can just take 5 tbs of bleach 5 tbs of vinegar mix with 1 cupe of water . Then drop a magnet in and some s teel wool let it sit over night. Strain out with some coffee filters and let dry. Its fairly easy and low fumes (watch out for the bleach and vinegar it produces chlorine at and advanced rate ,but this is safer then electralosis. Scrape the rust off and thenn powder it with moror and pestle and mix with Aluminu

  • close but try letting the iron sit outside for a few years first.......iron oxide is the stuff u needed yet this was still pretty cool....legit thermite would have burned right through the peice of metal u had it on lol

  • ive seen actual homemade thermite and the shit burnt for atleast an hour, lmao, emo0314 is right this is just aluminum, ya know, fireworks, lol

  • Did you use iron or iron oxide? Iron oxide would have eliminated the need for KNO3.

I remember when we did this at school, fun times.

  • i think it is because kno3 and aluminium is a crapy solution for flash powder. try to lit it without kno3, it wont hapen. and i dont know how much the iron effects it, but you could easilly lite this with a match (from a safe distance)

  • thermite is iron oxide and aluminum the kno3 isn't needed i bet thats where all the smoke came from because kno3 also know as saltpeter is a commonly found in smoke bombs

  • i knew i was right, but its still quite hot.

  • Sadly to say, the emo is right.

With out the oxygen you dont allow the redox reaction to happen...

But still, that looked alot like thermite and i'm sure it got really hot!

    Nice vid man.
