View of what subjects saw when they participated in an experiment that explored how perceptual distortions affect hand-eye coordination. Subjects wore a head-mounted display and position-and-orientation sensors on their head and hands, hooked up to an SGI SkyWriter. Subjects were asked to move their hand along a path shaped like an equilateral triangle. Sometimes they tried to move the end of a virtual wand (1m) in a similar shape. Motor behavior was not affected when visual information reflected egocentric spatial relationships (only the hand or wand was displayed). Behavior was affected when exocentric relationships were portrayed (3D trace of the path was displayed).

This is what people saw when they participated in a psychology experiment. The stuff that moves was the result of them moving their head or their hand. It felt like a gold ball or gold wand was attached to their hand. Sometimes the green tube flowed out of their hand or the wand, following the path that their hand or wand moved along. The results demonstrated that some kinds of visual feedback bent how they moved even though they thought they were always moving the same way.
