I never particularly liked Cardgage (And always found him completely superfluous, considering there was already (the much better) Homsar) But the H*R fanbase seemed to glom on to him to the point where he ended up becoming sort of the 13th main character.
Even so, I don't think H*R's quality declined with him. (It did dip at one point when they used every joke two or three time (like Little Brudder) but it got great at the end again, and then the kid was born and H*R died.
