The attached video is the STA (Shuttle Training Aircraft-N944NA) doing an approach at White Sands Space Harbor. As you can see, the STA doesn't land during training, we pull out the the same altitude that the Shuttle actually touches down...

Great flight. A little slow exiting the HAC...the shuttle typically exits at around 350 kias...about 12,000 ft. 5*

Do a search for LandingSS-2005.pdf. Page 3 of the document states that at the approach and landing interface (10,000ft), the shuttle is doing 682kph (424mph). That is 368kts. But, these speeds are TAS, not IAS. If you use a TAS to IAS converter, you will note that at 10,000ft, 368kts TAS = 307kts IAS. There are a couple of real-life shuttle HUD videos on the Youtube. You will note that in all of them, that the IAS indicator indicates between 280 and 310kts IAS on final approach.

On Youtube, search for a video entitled "Cockpit View of Shuttle Landing!". About 4:48 into the video, HUD symbology shows the shuttle is at 10,000ft, doing 300kts IAS.

Amazing video, but I have a question. I noticed on the GPS, the course was set to do the 240 degree turn the shuttle always does on approach, and I was wondering how you set the course to do a turn like that, because I can only ever get the GPS to do a direct straight course to my desired airport and once I get there, I have to switch from GPS to NAV to land.

The GPS is displaying the circular ground track because I programmed it with 42 waypoints spaced 1km apart covering the HAC. There is no other way to get the GPS to display the circular flight path.

The gear (and gear doors) add a large amount of drag to the vehicle when deployed. They already have to fly a 19 degrees glide slope to maintain 290kts on final. With the gear deployed it would be an even steeper glide slope on final. Another reason is that in most aircraft, the gear can't be deployed when the speed is above 250kts. At 300ft AGL the airspeed has bled to around 250kts.
