Inauguration of World Tipiṭaka in Columbo, Bangkok and Uppsala 2005

On March 6, 2005, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, the Royal Matriarch of Thailand, who is Honorary President of Tipiṭaka Presentation Worldwide, graciously presented a special inaugural set --the 40-volume World Tipiṭaka Edition in roman script-- to the President of Sri Lanka in Colombo upon a presidential invitation. This Royal Gift from Thailand was to commemorate the world's first written Pāḷi Tipiṭaka in old Sri Lanka over two thousands years ago.

Two additional inaugural sets were graciously presented to the President of the Constitutional Court of Thailand and the Vice-chancellor of Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden.

In the West, the Kingdom of Sweden has proved itself, domestically and internationally, to be the promoter of peace and wisdom-based development, as well as having been in the forefront of intelligent, responsible social and environmental protection. The Dhamma Society discerned that the Kingdom of Sweden would be the first and the most appropriated country in which to entrust the most Sacred Text of Theravāda Buddhasāsana, for preservation, and for development of a truly wisdom-based culture.

Consequently, Princess Galyani Vadhana graciously presented a special 40-volume inaugural Tipitaka edition to Uppsala University upon a formal request from the University Vice Chancellor and Chief Librarian of the Carolina Reiviva. On September 13, 2005, patron members of the Dhamma Society made a Tipiṭaka Pilgrimage to Sweden to hand-over the royal gift of Tipiṭaka in Roman script to the Library Carolina Rediviva, the oldest library in Scandinavia.

With this smooth and simple handing-over process, the World Tipiṭaka Edition has come to a happy conclusion in the west, after 50 years from its first inception of the Great International Council in Burma in 1957, including 6 more years of proof-reading as well as database-formating between 1999-2006 in Thailand.

Pāḷi Tipiṭaka is a gift of Dhamma and Peace for the World. Dhamma Society welcomes participation and cooperation from Peace-loving international community worldwide.

This archive documentary, recored and edited entirely by Dhamma Society volunteers, shows one of the most meritorious event of the inauguration.
