@landerssd mixing is the adjustments of voluming, eq, compression, panning, automation, reverb etc. between each track to make it sit nicely in the mix and make the song sound like a song... mastering is getting the right level of the whole complete mix, when it is (Bounced/exported to a .WAV file) to a commercial or decent volume level for cd distribution. thats what it is, in layman's terms :)
@agodeo The Loudness wars was over in early 2000 no one got the memo. Loudness won. If u have a song perfectly mixed and i have a song thas not mixed perfectly but is louder than urs it will be perceived as better. The "non engineering" public has be trained this way nothing we can do about it. Radio, internet, tv, record labels everyone thinks louder is better so if u want to stick with the competition master loud sorry.
SuperiFox is right. You have to master or "print" a song LOUD!. If not when a ipod or car stereo turns the audio up all of the freq's wont be balanced and printed and permanent so when dB or increase in volume are added everything sounds perfect and intact. Yes the ipod has volume control but it dosent balance a mix or keep the freq's and sound even and intact this is done by mastering all songs are mastered.Bob Katz Loudness wars? Yea loudness won so you gotta get over it.
@romodrummerjz thanks for the response. got it now

whats the difference between mixing and mastering?

I like dynamics. Music should get load when the player gets loud, not the volume of the overall sound. That's just trying to be flashy.

@according2ed But if you don't master loud initially, and then turn it up on the ipod, it'll be distorted and shitty as fuck.
