A struggle between two beliefs; a Moro (Islamic) and a Roman Catholic (Christianity). It is said that the performance dance begun as a result of Muslims raiding Christian towns along the shores of Philippines' southern island called Mindanao. The dance was adapted in the central and northern islands of the Philippines.
@zulfikarl Not only Zamboanga but also many others towns were very pro-hispanic: Cagayán de Oro, Davao...and many others were more supportive towards the spanish regime. During the negotiations of 1898 the spanish governmnet tried to keep Mindanao as it was quite a peaceful zone in comparasson with Luzón. And in fact those who fought against the americans until 1903 in MIndanao were mainly leaded by christians and mestizos of spanish.

You should check your facts. Mindanao, being predominantly Muslim at the time, was not supportive of either the Spaniards nor the Americans. The Muslim populace in Mindanao fiercely fought against both colonizers. The Spaniards and Americans were both perceived by the Muslims as a threat to their culture and religion. you might be referring only to Zamboanga in Western Mindanao which has a strong Hispanic influence. But its only a smal portion of Mindanao.

Nice. But the story is not accurate. Islam was starting to spread along all Filipines, but was not well stablished at any of the main regions. In fact Mindano was the most supportive towards Spain rule at the days of the american invassion.
