The Old St. Mary's Choir (Bob Barnhart, director) join Cantores Minores from Warsaw in singing the Agnus Dei from Missa brevissima under the direction of Joseph A. Herter. The a cappella Mass for mixed voices was written by Zdzisław Bernat (1930-94). Based on the Gregorian chant Mass no. XI Orbis factor, the mass once was designated to be sung on Sundays during Ordinary time. Thus, the frequency of its performance made it one of the best known chant masses.
A graduate of the Catholic University of Lublin, Bernat was a musicologist, conductor and composer as well as a priest for the Archdiocese of Poznań. For many years he was responsible for the Seminary Choir as well as the Cathedral Choir in Poznań.
The Mass at Old St. Mary's Church marked the 125th anniversary of the church building as well as the 175th anniversary of the establishment of the parish. Presiding over the concelebrated Mass on the Feast of the Assumption in 2010 was His Excellency, Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit.
