ARP Odyssey - A simple lead sound but using the s/h mixer to modulate VCO2 with itself. Also shows the ring modulator and FM of the filter with VCO 2
The odyssey is a superb little synth. In my opinion underrated compared to the Minimoog
It has quite a few functions that are missing on the Minimoog (S&H, Ring Mod, PWM, Duophonic, LFO trigger of the envelopes, initial gain, Hi Pass filter, VCO Sync etc) and is certainly well worth the money they go for. Usually my first suggestion for people looking for a decent analogue synthesizer.
Mine is pretty rare as it has a factory fitted second filter which is superb. It can do lopass, lopass 4 pole, notch, bandpass and vc high pass as well as the inbuilt hipass.
Quite a few different versions of these but I think they all sound good.

  • 0:53 Middle finger! (ONO)

  • @007gorilla telling your synths to fuck off once in a while, keeps them on their toes!

  • Hi. What would be the odyssey model to pick up?

  • @EdWood2006 Well, I like them all! The later ones with the keys extending out look cool, but those keys get knocked and smashed. Quite a few different filters in the various models. I am very happy with this one which is the second version. I would like an early white one as I think they look great. The filter in those is a 12db/octave I believe. Early ones like mine had a moog filter copy and then an ARP own design I think. It's all good anyway. Can't go wrong with an Odyssey!

  • Nice instructional. Would love to see a cleaner image and top view camera angle to see the tweaking in action. I noticed at around 3:48 to 4:00 I hear a low frequency pumping sound, can that be filtered out from the Odysseys controls?

  • @bookmarkthis just noticed your comment!

Thanks! I guess the lower sound could be filtered out with the hi pass filter no problem. I guess it's a side band from the ring mod.

And yes, video quality is crap. Need a new camera...no money!

  • cool!

  • sound must be quite amazing, I wish video was higher quality.

  • the duophonic feature of this makes it worth it completely

  • ARP Odyssey > Minimoog, hands down in my opinion. The sound, the functionality, and features. The BIGGEST shortcoming of the Odyssey however would have to be the fact that the LFO re-triggers upon key depression. This makes it impossible to produce, for example, and ongoing PWM pad-type sound while smoothly switching notes....

  • @buchla300 Thanks for that. I may go with the MK2. Cheers.

  • @hondaprelude9296 yes, they used the odyssey (along with a minimoog) at the time.
