This clip is the second of Philanthromedia's four featured speakers from a Thursday evening event at Cooper Union, hosted by World Hunger Year (WHY) called Step up to the Plate: Ending the Food Crisis. Gerardo Reyes Chávez is a leader and organizer for the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW), a community based farm worker organization in Florida.

He spoke passionately about the modern day slavery system that exploits farm workers in exchange for cheap and plentiful produce. Chávez's organization has pressured major corporations into paying a fair cost for the labor that goes into the picking of tomatoes in Immokalee, the first step in recognizing the value of labor in the food cycle.
