The best way I know of to describe the Old Ones is something along the lines of the following:
In D&D, you can play a paladin of a particular deity. You go around spreading the word of their teachings and generally smiting everyone who disagrees.
Cthulhu, who destroys entire universes when he rolls in his sleep, is effectively a paladin of even higher powers, and not even a very high level one to boot.
TL;DR The Old Ones ever show up, we're boned six ways from Sunday.
It's not a question of a never say die spirit and strapping on a shotgun to go kill the nasties. The whole point of the original mythos is simply this: We don't stand a chance. We don't pose any kind of threat to them. Our minds snap in their presence and everything we do as we scurry about our little lives is meaningless. That's the message of the stories.
Ooh, but that is not right. If I well remember, as long as fantasy go, we are so alien/irrational to them that they can not predict our actions...
A powerful wizard, a master strategist and even maybe a helluva warrior (Like Gatts of Berserk) could kill an Old One if not fight with him hand to hand...
Lets just not forget that Old Ones are not Imortal Ones. If they were, they would not have to wait for Death to Die to return to us.
@bavettesAstartes Errr... no. At least not as far as HPLs own stories go. Cant speak for other mythos authors. Also, if youre reffering to Cthulhu he is a relatively "minor" god in the mythos, an "old one" if memory serves. The true "outer gods" are more of the infinite power, its more like they just dont care about a pathetic little mudball, where some insignificant monkeys roam. And why would they? Im reffering to the gods like Shub-Niggurath or Yog-Sothoth. Also sry for TL:DR

But I think I am one of those stubborn humans that just can't quit the fight...
In any case; Mankind will learn, new kinds of fear, when they are here! muahaha
