I think that they reall moved forward with the soundtrack. AOE 1 and 2 soundtracks were dark and moody to me, with nothing to do with their era/time period. This soundtrack i feel captures the colonial/western expansion age, and thats what it should do. 2 thumbs up for Age of Empires 3!
