Clavicle (collar bone) fractures are a common occurrence in Orthopaedics, accounting for nearly 2.6% of all fractures. They also occur most commonly in young active individuals. The patient in this video, a 28 year old male, fractured his right clavicle riding a motorcycle. After his injury, he visited an Orthopaedic surgeon. The treatment plan... a figure-8 brace. In a recent article from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery American Edition (2007)*, it was stated that for displaced midshaft clavicle fractures, the rate of nonunion (not healing) without operative treatment (e.g., a sling or figure-8 brace), was 15.1%. For the same type of fractures, with operative treatment (e.g., using a plate), the nonunion rate was 2.2%. Needless to say, after 8 weeks of being in a figure-8 brace, this patients clavicle did not heal. So, he decided to come to the Sanders Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, in Houston, Texas, where he met Mark Sanders, MD FAAOS. Here, the patient was educated about surgical fixation using a titanium locking plate and booked for surgery the next week. The video shows footage of the patient both before the surgery and 1 day after his surgery. After surgery, the patient came back to the office. His dressing was changed, x-rays were taken, and he began rehab. Because he was in a sling for 8 weeks prior to seeing Dr. Sanders, the muscles in his shoulder and arm had atrophied (weakened), making rehab slightly more difficult. Regardless, his clavicle is now fixed and he is on the road to having a normal life again. • i have a question

i re-broke my collar bone about 1 week and 4 days ago almost 2 weeks now

i have gotten a big bump on it now and it feels weird

and it doesnt feel straight and i feel like i might need surgery

but i dont know if its too late or not

can i still get it done?

  • @MrYakatori

There is no problem repairing a clavicle fracture at two weeks. Finding a competent person with experience with these problems is not so easy though.

  • I had a pin fitted just on 4 weeks ago.

while the xray show union developing I'm suffering greater pain then the break or the surgery in my trapezoid near the ac join. close enough to where the pin was drilled through. I have been injected with steroid which was mixed with local. this gave me instant relief for a short while.

What would you suggest is happening? and will it get better without another surgery?

  • Clearly, the pin is irritating the soft tissues around the shoulder. Hopefully the fracture will unite soon and you can have the pin removed.

I have seen this problem a few times before, and don't intall these pins.

  • I was told that the pin will never be removed? it has been three days since the steroid injection and I'm starting to feel some relief. I think it must have been muscle damage "collateral" from surgery. why would they choose to leave the pin in place for the rest of my life? what are the pro's and cons to this decision?

  • I think that this issue that you will have trouble with the pin has all ready declared itself.

I would take it out as soon as fracture union was established. Period.
