Also running your finger round inside the tyre looking for the glass or whatever isnt a good idea either.

Horrible!!! Let the solvent completely dry and don't touch the sticky part of the patch with your fingers. Then, once it is dry, put the patch on and massage it into the tube.
You don't have to hold it for a couple of minutes...
