We went to Norway to interview Gaahl, lead singer of the band Gorgoroth. Gaahl really believes in this whole ideology behind what he's doing—he's not just some rockstar fronting a band. The thing with Black Metal is, in Norway, everybody is exactly the same. There's nothing to rebel against, because everybody's really well off. It's one of the richest countries in Europe. There is no lower class, it's like middle-class white kids everywhere—no one has anything to complain about. And he's this sort of eccentric figure amidst this sea of contentment and sameness. The way I see it is, in America you have guys like 50 Cent who are supposed to be the "villain." Kids like him cause they're parents hate him, and that's basically what Gaahl is. He's their musical villain so to speak. But there's a lot of different sides to the scene.

TRUE Norwegian Black Metal was not satanic it was Pagan. The whole satanic side of it was brought about through gross misunderstanding by the media and then jumped on by young kids who didn't understand the true roots of Black Metal Burzum are a pagan band not satanic and as such are the root of REAL Norwegian Black Metal. Satanic metal is played because there is money to be made out of silly kids who find it easier to identify with the church and satan than the old Pagan Gods

Paganism is Satanism to the Christians, the west is Christianized and dippid in the putrid blood of the thorncrowned clown. Black Metal grabs that scrappy runt by the throat and throttles it to death.

In all reality Black Metal was started by Venom. Their sound was thrash but they talked about satan and had that satanic message. If you listen to Venom's Black Metal then listen to Gorgoroth or Mayhem you will find a vast difference. Venom was early thrash, this version of black metal is a completely different sound with a stolen label. Its a beautiful art form but nothing like the creators were really doing.
