Brian Lenihan battlefield tour part2

Brian Lenihan, Minister for Finance, on a tour of the 1916 battlefield running from the GPO to the houses in Moore Street that are now the only surviving intact houses where the 1916 Rising took place. This is in three parts; I'm sorry it's a bit jumpy - I cut out some parts where private matters were discussed.

The guides for the Minister - who himself got a First in history from Cambridge - include descendants of the 1916 leaders.

The GPO garrison of around 250 men and the three remaining women (the other 35 or so had brought the wounded to Jervis Street Hospital) retreated across Henry Street and into Moore Lane after the disastrous charge of The O'Rahilly and his men up Moore Street, where they were cut down by machine gun fire from Parnell Street.

Aiming to reach the Williams & Woods factory in Great Britain Street (now Parnell Street), the garrison cut through houses in Moore Street and occupied the entire terrace.

An unknown hero - utterly forgotten today - is young Sean McLoughlin, who rallied the troops and led them through the back streets into the terrace at Moore Street.

Pádraig Pearse insisted on surrendering after Robert and Ellen Dillon and their daughter Mary ran out of their burning house and were machine-gunned by the British.

Nurse Elizabeth O'Farrell then left the terrace under a white flag and walked up to the British to treat for surrender.

Four of the houses on this priceless historic terrace are the subject of a Protection Order; however, this is not protecting them.

These houses will be gutted by the developer of a planned mall backing on to the GPO, and the historic Moore Lane will become an interior walkway between the shops - unless the developer is stopped, and the houses, Moore Street and Moore Lane are preserved.

With 2016 coming up soon, there's a choice to be made.

@WayneWexford He bankrupted Ireland by guaranteeing the Banks. Therefore, the book stopped with him. He is probably riddled with earthworms right now. Thank god he died of cancer, I hope Lenihan burns in hell. Now the stupid Fianna Fail voters can reflect on their mistakes.

@swissnor Why do you hope he had an agonizing death? Please cite actual reasons instead of "HE RUINED OUR ECONOMY!". Tell me HOW he (Brian Lenihan) ruined our economy.

@WayneWexford I can't believe a Wexford man would make excuses for a guy who helped ruined this country. Lenihan was no patriot. Lenihan was a corrupt and stupid fucker like all the rest of them. I hope Lenihan had an agonizing death and I hope the rest when they die also have an agonizing death.
