This is a short series showing you my VERY LOW COST, HIGHLY EFFECTIVE system for de-watering, settling and filtering waste oil for use as a diesel supplement/alternative (subject to suitability).
Two Systems are shown; one for absolute filth contaminated with food/water/cigarette ends/fat, and the other for visibly clear oil only (simpler system).
All components are selected for cheapness and availability. The final filtration is done through vacuum cleaner bags (Henry's are good)....they can be burned for fuel when clogged with solid fats (see FATLOG series).

Go ahead and emancipate yourself from fuel slavery.

Other guidance (you must verify as current and valid)
Currently in the UK you do not require a 'Waste Carriers Licence' if you are collecting for your own use; you can use 2,500L/yr before registeing with HMCE to pay duty (about 30p/L), but you must keep a record of what you have used.

  • you are on the honor system???haha how would it be found out that you used more than that amount allotted or that you are even using any at all. movement along the surface of the planet is nobody's concern or taxable.

  • @circusboy90210

    I like you philosophy.

Protect yourself from inconvenient interruptions and enforced assumptions by keeping a record in the vehicle, showing how little you use.

    And check out TPUC.org

  • Thx for the info I have just bought an old wooden boat with a bmc1500 going to do this as fuel is about the only cost I have due to running my engine to generate electricity so this will be helpfull I intend to be almost completely self sufficient within a year

  • Particularly with a low-rev generator application;

Avoid lacquering the cylinders and clogging injectors with occasional bouts of 'diesel plus injector cleaner'......I would do at least 20L as a break after every 200L of Veg oil.

If it is possible to rev the engine up for a while on the cleaning mixture, so much the better.

My car has a simple starter tank (diesel) that I put 'redex' or similar in once in a while.

  • thanks for your reply my friend. i now think i will stick to diesel and put redex in with it. that helps the polution. i know it costs more but its better for my engine as well as the enviroment.

  • Jubycell.

Nice, simple, efficient Hyrogen-on-demand, reduces emmissions better than redex will.

    Lowers fuel consumption too.

I do not have it yet, but I spoke to the chap. £350 for a Xantia 1.9td....fitted.

Best price I have found for this kind of thing.

    Devon, GB-based.

  • WARNING ! Veg Oil will Kill a Common Rail Diesel Engine ! Stick with the Simple Diesel engine like the 1.7D Isuzu found in most older Vauxhall's or the 2.5 Ford Diesel found in most Transit's!

  • thanks so much for doing this x x

  • @acerwizard Do you have a heat exchanger plugged in the cooling system of the engine to heat the oils and thin them?

  • Brilliant solution with the vacuum cleaner bags! I have just arranged for some pick up of cooking oil from the restaurants nearby. Luckily, nobody was there before me to claim their used oil :) I will try this on my old Toyota Landcruiser that I bought this spring with this in mind; to be able to drive much cheaper, and more environmentally friendly! Fingers crossed -but they say an old diesel engine can run on a lot of different stuff.. I've so far tried it with ATF automatic transmission fluid

  • Hey I got a question! :-)

At the moment, I've got a Fiat Punto with a Petrol Engine. Is is worth selling it and buying a diesel car?

And if so, what engine works best with the vegetable oil?

    Regards

    :)

  • @acerwizard I don't keep a record of how much crude diesel I use. I never have understood why untaxed diesel has a die in it. die cost money & biodiesel looks like taxed diesel. I'm still very paranoid about using svo.
