Sudden cardiac death claims the lives of approximately 1,000 students each year in the U.S., a number that early detection of hidden cardiac disease could reduce. Through the efforts of the Max Schewitz Foundation, more than 70 percent of Antioch Community High School's students received free EKG screening tests on Oct. 28 to check for heart problems. Trained medical staff supervised the testing, and cardiologists on site read the test results immediately. Parents of students with results outside normal limits are contacted by phone and counseled about recommended follow-up testing. After those parents are notified, parents of students whose tests are within normal limits are notified, typically within three weeks.
