They have inhabited our planet for millions of years, and yet no living creature seems more alien to us. Award-winning cameraman Wolfgang Thaler and Bert Hoelldobler, a leading ant authority, bring us face-to-face with the mysterious world of these social insects. Special macro film technology introduces us into the fascinating world of ants as no film did before.

Of all the wonders of nature, Formicidae always fascinate me the most. They accomplish so many things we have, but by biological means instead of technological. It's like their on the cutting edge of evolution itself...

i would assume that being an ant queen holds the sole advantage of having YOUR genes passed on. But ants are basically clones of one another, farmed by the nest from their mother. So I guess the only reason to have yourself queen would be to ensure the closest relation to yourself to a 1:2 & 3:4 gene ratio? But this is already accomplished with any queen, thus the farming of her by the hive. Ants live in a generally 3:1 female, male ratio because of this. does this change with the jousting ants?
