Footage I shot of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan on the RED ONE Digital Cinema Camera. I edited this piece together (starting with some footage from my previous Afghanistan clips) as a demo to show the capabilities of this new technology, and how it can bring quality, scalability, and longevity back to combat zone footage unseen since WWII/Viet Nam era. The actual resolution of the footage is 4096x2048: http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/3089/4krescomparisonchart800br8.jpg I only had 5 days with the camera in country, the footage has not been color corrected (I think it's best to see the footage before being "treated"). This video was edited off the proxies on a Mac Pro.

It is my hope that the DoD shows interest in assembling a specially trained team of service-members to film on this new equipment and provide footage to disseminate back to the public at a quality this generation deserves, both home and abroad.

Jason Wingrove of FXGuide recently interviewed me regarding this footage and my thoughts on advancing this quality for Combat Zone acquisition. It is episode #015 here: http://www.fxguide.com/therc/red_centre_015/

  • Great video. Now that YouTube supports 4K resolution, why not re-upload it in original resolution.

  • @Nomoreidsleft YouTube won't let me update the video with a 4K version and keep the comments/stats. I would like to re-edit it with some color correction and upload that at 4K for comparison, but I need to get the time/access to a proper editing system again to do it right.

  • @whole27 On the web it might appear that way, but look at a still pulled from the 4K RAW files the RED records vs. the high compression of the Canon's codec, and there is a difference for historical use. That is the whole point of my proposal. There's also a Latitude/Dynamic Range hit when you use a camera like the Canon for this purpose. Don't get me wrong, I think the Canon's are awesome tools, but not for the long run versatility that I'd like returned to historically valuable imagery.

  • I love this video, I love the CSAR Pararescue video as well. You have made a country that is so desolate and barren into such a beautiful place. When I get down about my tour and the things that happened, I watch this video and see the beauty in a place I hate so much. Love your work.

  • @G3SM case in point british pathe that have digitized their archive footage and uploaded to youtube, it looks great in HD and was shot in the 1920's to today. Film and digital film are larger than any viewing format we widely use today so it will last until viewing tech surpasses it.

  • Like this if you want YOU TUBE to allow him to add a 4K version to this video!

  • Quite frankly one of the best youtube videos in existence.

Although for some reason I experienced some lag when watching it in HD :( not cool... must be a youtube fail =/

But man, that makes me feel proud to be American :3

God Bless our troops! Thanks for the great video sir! *salutes*

  • I love this footage. Terrific cinematography. But for some reason it looks like 16mm than red. Maybe its the colour but apart from that i love it
