Trailing by a run in the bottom of the 9th in Game 5 of the best-of-5 NLCS, the Big Red Machine mounted a memorable comeback. The announcer was a young Al Michaels, who was the Voice of the Reds in '72. He would stay with the Reds in '73 before becoming the Voice of the Giants. Michaels has called this one of the most memorable moments of his broadcasting career.

  • @Ariamaluum: I agree that they should have beat the Braves in 91, but the Reds in 90 were pretty tough. Their win over Oakland in the World Series wasn't that big of an upset.

  • @joclance22 Moose died in a car wreck a few weeks after the '76 season while

heading to a golf course that Maz owned,I do believe!!

  • Bob Moose was the Bucs pitcher. I believed he died during that off season.

  • @sptrfn. Pittsburgh should have beaten the Braves in 1991 and the Reds in 1990 but the Braves should have beaten the Pirates in 5 but Barry Bonds' bat came alive in that ' 92 series.

  • @sptrfn: They were up 2-1 in that series, and blew two chances to close it out. And,they had just come off of a WS win the year before. That should have been their year as well. The Reds should have went to the WS in 73, not 72.

  • @sptrfn What are you basing that on, the Red's had an 8-4 record against them in 1972 as well as beating them in the playoffs. Beating them in the playoffs all three times they faced during this era.

Pittsburgh was tough though, along with Cincinnati, the two "small market" teams dominated baseball.

  • One of the most inexplicable moments in Pirate history, along with what would happen 20 years later in Atlanta. Pittsburgh was better than Cincy that year, but they let it slip away.

  • Bench was the best. Another great call from Al Michaels.

  • Dramatic home run from Bench. The great Roberto Clemente's last game.

  • Thank you for this
