My final for 2-D animation at NEIT. Had to be:
-720x480 DV NTSC
-Longer than 30 seconds
-had to include a 3-d layer or effect

I, of course, based it off Mario. This is (if you didn't guess) supposed to be a pre-menu video for Super Mario Bros. Made with Adobe After Effects CS3 on a Macbook Pro.

Watch it in HD quality to see the true 8-bit awesomeness. Also, I know I didn't make Mario flashing when he gets the star power-up, but that was because of time constraints... also laziness.

Enjoy.

  • Can you explain how you managed to animate mario? how did you made his walk cyle?

  • @soulsen611 I forget the specifics, but basically it involves embedding a project within a project when you use After Effects. You can create one timeline and then embed that on a layer inside of another timeline.

  • @Mojo2Jojo2 Do you got the .aep und could upload it ?

  • @soulsen611 I do, but I'd rather not upload my original .aep. If you're looking at how to replicate what I did, I can set up a sample project and upload that or email it to you direct. You can email me at joe [at] left-right-up-down [dot] com

  • So you took the big #2 off Lost Levels' title screen for the end picture?

  • @RoninCatholic Nope. Used the original title, seen here. I believe I used the one off of nesmaps.com

YES HE CAN I JUST SAW IT! :D

  • How did you get him to run/continue running? I am doing a similar project in After Effects and I can't get him to run or look like he is running for a long period of time.

  • You shoudl doa version with 300 style effects with slowmotion and stuff. It would be cool

  • @Mojo2Jojo2 The ground and bushes are the ground and bush tiles from Lost Levels (NES version), not the regular SMB. Also, the shadows on the font.

So either it was mislabeled, or this is the visually revamped version from the arcade port.

  • @Mojo2Jojo2

Hey i emailed you twice. I hope you are still willing to share a sample project. Would be great :)

  • this looks like it could be easier to do in flash...not that i have much experience with either program but.... yeah
