Itachi was hoping sasuke would survive the fight. It was all in his plan to awaken Sasuke's Mangekyou. If you remember, the Mangekyou is awakened when you kill the person you care the most about, i.e. in Sasuke's case, Itachi. So, very complicated the man he swore to hate was actually the man who loved him most....a brother's love.

@cnicjr87 that's only part of the plan, the main purpose of this fight is to satisfy Sasuke's vengeance as well as to get Orochimaru literally off Sasuke's back :) and yes Bro love. Too bad sasuke chose to continue on with his vengeance against everyone else.
