Mostly sourced from silent super 8 Cine film this shows Stratford station in the mid to late 1980's.

We see many types of train, including 312, 315, 307, 313 and 416 as well the original single-unit trains on the Docklands Light Railway, the 1962 stock on the Central Line and some slides of DMU's on the former diesel service to North Woolwich.

Also seen are some non-stop rides through this station; two on the trains which at the time worked to Colchester and ran non stop between London Liverpool Street and my local station (Ilford), completing the journey in just 10 minutes (a duration which the present-day 'all stations' services exceed by as much as 50%) plus there are two non-stop rides on the Central Line. These were filmed on Boxing day (alas don't remember which year) when the Underground provided a minimal service but the mainline was completely shut down.

  • @ingravegreen Lofty,

My message? I must go and look for it!

The DLR route to International seems to follow a different route than the NLL route, although its exact route will only become clear when the line opens.

I think the DLR's 3 car trains will travel at 5 minute intervals, alternately going to Woolwich Arsenal via City Airport and Beckton. That should cope with normal traffic, but as for the Olympics, well I suspect the whole capacity issue remains 'hopes and guesses'.

  • @ingravegreen ah but... the DLR branch from Canning Town extends through Stratford Low Level to Stratford International. The track is there, its all built and as I understand it the line will be opening within a month (ie: during August 2011).

I just wish I'd filmed the NLL trains south of Stratford... could have used the footage in another 'contrasts' film with DLR trains.

  • For a 'train spotters' film that was a really interesting bit of recent history. The tallest building around at the time seemed to be the 7 storey office block (4:32) which is now 9 storey Gerry Raffles Square, where I live. Now dwarfed by Westfield etc..Funny how memories of the 70's and 80's have that same soft edge as the super 8! Thanks for posting.

  • i am a train driver based at ilford depot and i have found this footage facinating ...well done !!

  • @citytransportinfo well, you get people getting on from both sides at rush hour so even if you're the only person on the new platform, you'll get pushed off by the people on the old platform. its a nightmare

  • @rebelyelleasyrider I'm curious - why is it harder to board the train now? I often use the new platform to access the Jubilee Line, it makes life easier for me! And in the evenings, if I arrive on an Overground train and want to collect a free Evening Standard from outside the stn I use the new walkway at the eastern end of the station and walk through a train (plat 3 to 3a) to reach the main exit, as its a lot less crowded than using the direct passageways from the Overground platforms.
