A recent spate of vicious attacks against Indian students culminated in an international incident with the Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh clearly irked at the insensitive response from the Victoria Police.

Indian students backed by the Graduate Student Associate and the Socialist Alternative took out a rally from Royal Melbourne Hospital where Shravan is battling for his life after a unprovoked attack on him over the previous weekend. The rally went through Bourke St and then ended in Flinders St Station with student staging a sit-in protest.

The incident reminded many Melbournians of a similar protest by Taxi drivers last year, protesting against the frequency of attacks on cabbies in melbourne.

UPDATE:
The protesters were dispersed by the police at about 5:15am, 1st June 2009. The protesters were dispersed by force with some claiming the cops were too rough on them. Atleast 18 of them were detained for breaching peace and were later released. One student is still believed to be held on the charge of riotous behaviour.
