Not all 'nerds' are ugly, nor are all 'nerds' intrested in the SCA or other re-enactment groups, and finally, not all 'cool' people are against the SCA or other re-enactment groups, many people who you would consider 'cool' could actually be re-enactors of a form.
Many people gain an interest in history through school, thus why the people who listen more (those who you would call 'nerds')are more likely to move on to activities.
