In my opinion Erich von Stroheim (1885-1957) was more character than actor. But he really did some very interesting stuff. The use of firearms seems to has been mainly a matter of style for him. In Foolish Wives (1924) which he also directed he was a fake Russian count. In the The Great Flamarion (1945), dir. Anthony Mann he is the title character who does a shooting act in a night club. The young lady who disturbs him is Mary Beth Hughes.

  • @Drewman5000: (part 2 of 2): really anything of Von Stroheim's is worth tracking down. He was an excellent writer. If you see "The Wedding March" with Fay Wray, you can really see complex characters, historical and romantic themes, and rich psychological symbolism at his best. Check out "Hearts of the World" if you can find it, one of the reasons for his "title" "Man You Love to Hate" & the book "Von" is an excellent biography. Hope that's all helpful & I hope you enjoy discovering Von Stroheim.

  • @Drewman5000: It's very possible to watch a full-length Von Stroheim. The clip you're watching here is from "Foolish Wives," which he directed. First film to cost a million. YouTube has it in full. Also look for "Greed" rightly considered one of the best films ever made. Next best source is your local library or TCM channel. If you are looking to buy a film version on DVD, always, always go for Kino on Video edition. The Best. For his acting check out "Sunset Boulevard" & "The Grand Illusion."

  • can someone help me out? i was introduced to Von Stroheim by hearing his name mentioned in a voice recording of Jim Morrison, who compares himself to Von Stroheim by saying, "he is a man whom people love to hate" (rouch quote). So my question is, is there a way for me to somehow watch a full length film, or where i might find one? and is there a title you can recommend?

  • an amazing film

  • fascinating. I am a big fan of von Stroheim.

    Thanks for posting this.
