  • I think he is wrong. If people know that capitalism is bad it wont make them automatically do something about it. Many people (according to polls like 40% in Germany for example) do think so - they still don't do anything.

One reason IMO: videos like this about anarchy are to be found in masses on youtube - but I never ever heard any specific suggestion what to change now. Its just self-reflective philosophizing.

  • First, remember this was an anarchist conference, so he was talking to anarchists.

He was quoting anarchists from the turn of the century, who thought that the revolution is just around the corner. Obviously it didn't happen.

Also, sure there are a lot of philosophizing by anarchists on youtube, but in this talk he criticized that and suggested we do more.

And there are plenty of specific proposals. You are a fan of Chomsky and there are plenty of implications of his critiques. Others too.

  • Unchosen positive obligation = some action which you are forced to carry out without your agreement or consent, eg joining an army, paying for schools even though you don't use them, paying taxes in general - ie most things which the state does!!

  • tell something more what do you mean by "unchosen positive obligations" robzrob, it seems unclear for me, could You?

  • There is no place for ideology in anarchy because ideology inevitably involves unchosen positive obligations. Unchosen positive obligations can only be kept going by force - and that's not anarchy.

  • cause in capitalism, the truth belongs to who pays for it, there is no place for ideology, what once is ideology, becomes just a way of being paid for.
