@rgaleny Ok. I can't disagree!

@rgaleny "Social Utility is a straight forward secular perspective that can include HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER, and is not devoid of social doctrine".
?!
'Social Utility' is straight forward ? bs!
who decides what is useful for society?
-
those with power? majority? lol we get/got slavery that way.
-
each individual? what happens when rapist's self interest and utility differs from others? they punish him? again we end up with rule of powerful/majority.

A few years back, I purchased and watched some philosophy dvds from The Teaching Company. They were great and helped understand books that I had read but not completely comprehended. However, I then bought a dvd o Buddhism and it wasn't so good. The instructor was weak. Still, there is some good stuff like this one on Notes from Underground.

Even in religion there is a battle between Dogma and the useful doctrines. and always about interpretations. You can get lost in that. Social Utility is a straight forward secular perspective that can include HOW WE TREAT EACH OTHER, and is not devoid of social doctrine. But I understand his goal and what he is trying to bring to light. What are we without our COMMITMENTS.

I understand F.D.'s goal but I think His reasoning is off. The disease and the symptoms, and the cure. The cure is the selfless love inspired by the invocation of Christ as it's model. The disease is always ignorance, selfishness, and bad habits of character. Utilitarianism and enlightened self interest are not incompatible with finer religious doctrine. He just argues that they are not. And choosing Christ would be just as POSER-ESQUE because it is a limiting choice.
