The south has churned out more than its fair share of memorable rappers but few have emerged with a flavor that is as stylistically unique as that of Pinney Woods.
Pinney Woods takes its name from the Chattanooga neighborhood where the duo, which once comprised Sutta Kane and Brikk -- cut their teeth on the music of hip-hop's finest. It is a name that continues to stand as the group's moniker despite Brikk's untimely and tragic death a year ago.

Pinney Woods' debut CD, "Eclipse," released by El Sobrante, California-based Black Ice Records, is a fine example of southern hip-hop seasoned with west coast flavor. Says Sutta Kane, "I guess it would be a southern feel but it's been stretched so much that it's universal. The only thing that really lets you know that it's southern is my accent."

Content-wise "Eclipse" covers all the bases; it speaks the language of everyday people but somehow manages to do so in a way that has yet to be mastered by other rappers. Add Sutta Kane's melodic flow and you've got the makings of a new brand of hip-hop that is at once entertaining and groundbreaking. "I just want to take people on a rollercoaster ride," he says. "I want my music to make you happy one minute and mad the next. I'm saying things in a way that a lot of people wouldn't say them."

Sutta's clear-cut favorite on the album is "Paperchase," featuring Bobby Valentino. "That's an honest song," he says. "It pulls no punches. It's me talking about going out there and getting that money. It's a paper chase for me and I'm not afraid to admit it."

But just as he knows how to keep it real about his quest for money, he also knows how to inspire and motivate; case in point: the uplifting and irresistible "I'm Gon Be Aiight," featuring none other than Lil Wayne. "This song is for people who know how to hold their head up and let the world know that no matter what I might be going through, I'm gon' get through it. I'm gon' be aiight."

Other standouts on the album, which is produced by Aktual and Swampkat, include "The Money Don't Lie," I Hate You" (featuring The Game), the island-inspired "Why Dem Fools," the infectious "Distance" (featuring female singer Francci), "Show Off" (for the ladies) and "You." "I kinda went out on a limb with this song," he says referring to "You," a cleverly crafted song that makes generous use of the word "you."

The broadness of Sutta Kane's sound can most likely be attributed to his own musical taste. "I can honestly say that I've been influenced by everyone from Michael Jackson and Prince to practically every rapper that has ever picked up the mic. I took something from all of them whether they were big names or not."

As he prepares for the release of "Eclipse," Sutta Kane does not hesitate to point out the bitter-sweetness of the moment and stresses that he will continue to pay tribute to the memory of his departed friend and partner. "Me and that guy put a lotta work in on this album," he says. "We started it together and I told him we were gonna end it together regardless. I can't let the legacy die that easily."

Sutta says he never once considered replacing Brikk or dropping the name Pinney Woods. "It was do or die with us," he notes. "Either we did it together or we didn't do it. We started it with Pinney Woods and we're gonna end it with Pinney Woods."

Brikk was killed last March during a robbery attempt at his home in Chattanooga. Black Ice producer/VP of A&R Deprez Jackson was shot multiple times during the incident and spent months recovering. Sutta said Brikk's death filled him with rage. "It put a lotta anger in me and slowed down the whole process but it was more motivation to go on and push this thing."

Sutta says he owes it to his friend to be successful -- and he owes it to Chattanooga. "I always talk about doing this for the money and it is for the money because with money I can help a lot of people. I want to blow this Black Ice label up so I can reach back to Chattanooga and bring the talent out of there."

  • I love this video, I also viewed the "I Hate U" video, this group is sick, good potential. I would love to see this video all over the television and his music should already be on the radio. How does some of the crap we listen to make to the radio and songs that these guys create, we rarely get to hear. I love the voice it is very distinct and it doesn't get on my nervous after listening to the song over and over again. Also Bobby Valentino did his thing also, keep up the good work Pinney!
