  • What is the point of gold and silver? Both metals are worthless without oil. Gold and Silver are worth money because they are mostly used in electronics. Electronics that use up oil to be created. The only thing that is worth any value is knowledge. Knowledge of farming, knowledge of medicine, knowledge of engineering etc. All of these things are actually useful in a post peak oil world, not only tangible things which value is determined by ourselves.

  • @HDaviator A post peak world will likely be similar to a pre peak world. Even a small amount of study will help you come to the realization that gold and silver were money in a pre peak world, and they will be money in a post peak world too. And already are.

  • @HDaviator you are talking about barter - and you come to the problem of coincidence of wants. If all you have is berries, and what you really want are shoes - how can you convince the shoemaker (who doesn't like berries) to trade you for shoes? If you are very clever, you will trade your berries for something that is acceptable by everyone - that thing is money. Which is, and will continue to be, Gold and Silver.

  • Thank you much for a good tip!

  • my pleasure

  • Now this is a hilarious scenario if SHTF truly happens. We go back to gold and silver. Gold and silver is too cumbersome for daily transport. Goldsmith's appear. They issue coupons or paper to hold and secure our metals in their vaults. We trade the paper with others instead of retrieving our metals from the goldsmith. See where I'm taking this? :-)

  • yeah totally, I thought of that a bit. Almost like history repeating itself for the same reasons - but in a different situation..

    Lol

Just because something was so in pre-oil time does not mean it will continue to be the same in post oil time. People need to start getting educated because the time of the middle man will be over. In other words, people will start to deal directly with farmers, doctors etc, instead of dealing with the stores, insurance etc. I believe trading will be a big thing, because really, that is what it has been this whole time. Sell something, to get money to buy something else.

  • @Bernd1964 the sound of $ in my hand!

  • If we go back to gold and silver we'll ultimately go back to paper. We left metals for a reason and we'd leave them again for the exact reasons why they were left in the first place. :)

  • @MrFredGSanford Silver's not too cumbersome for daily transport. You'd only need to carry a couple ounces at any time. If the entire population was using it, one ounce alone would be very valuable.
