Jacques Gauthe is at his best on this track with the Hot Five Jazzmakers at "C'est what?" Front St., Toronto on June 11th 1994.
Two choruses on his beloved soprano sax and then later a chorus on clarinet gave him lots of space to display his wonderful tone and improvisations. The brass of Leigh Smith - cornet & trumpet and Brian Towers - trombone are having some fun too, as they indulge in their Ellington-like growling and muted chase solos. Colin Bray is a stalwart on string bass as usual and Rainer Hunck has moved to guitar, to suit the mood for this number. Janet Shaw has laid down her reeds and moved to piano, which she used to do frquently in the early days at "C'est what?" when there was a piano on stage.
The tune itself is loosely based upon the Ellington/Hodges composition "Rent Party Blues" but without the verse. If you like Jacques Gauthe, you will enjoy our other two "youtube" offerings which feature him - "Oh Baby" and "Over The Waves"
